Interview with Domina DJanes
December 4th, 2007 by OllyIn need of some funky or fast & furious -but most of all- female Technobeats? Search no further; the Domina DJanes are here! This Brazilian DJ team consisting solely out of women was idealized in january 2007 by Fernanda Martins and the five other DJanes. Last week we spoke to DJ Fernanda about this girlpowered Brazilian DJ-team called Domina Djanes.
Hi Fernanda, let’s start with a quick introduction; who is DJ Fernanda Martins?
Hi, I’m a 25 year old Brazilian Techno DJane, born in Medianeira, a small city in the south of Brazil.
How did you get into electronic music?
I loved music since my youth; when I was about 15 or 16 years old I started getting more and more interested in electronic music. But the fact that I lived in a small city did not help very much. There was no scene around my region and even the scene in Brazil wasn’t fully developped yet. Everything I knew about music was what I could find on the internet and in reality I could not even identify the different styles at that time. Later on I moved to Curitiba City to study PR and Techno was big in Brazil by that time. So basically my life was going to university and listen to a lot of e-music, in my house, at parties, in my car, etc. Most of what I heard was at the parties that I used to go to. These parties were mostly techno-minded. In 2005 I decided that I wanted to learn how to mix and of course I chose Techno, the style I love the most.
What can you tell us about the DJ-culture in Brazil?
Being a DJ in Brazil is really difficult…
It’s a smaller scene and not as professional as in many European countries for example. The work of a DJ isn’t that much valued, the payment isn’t that good for most of us and many have a second job. In most cases that’s the only way to keep the passion of DJ’ing. You have to work very hard and really like what you do to be a DJ in Brazil! It’s a shame because we have so much gifted talent in Brazil and often these people never get the opportunity to show their talent and earn enough money to keep their dreams alive.
How did the idea to form a female DJ team come up?
One day, me and some other DJanes of Domina were at a party and we talked about throwing a party with all of us together in the line up. We had a few drinks and from chatting about this subject the idea of forming a group to promote our work came up. We were all very enthouisatic about it and a few days later we had a meeting and developped the team.

Well, now that you kinda got to know the girls, let’s continue our interview:
Fernanda, are you or any of the other Domina members into music production?
Yes, I started making music not too long ago. Gab already has made many tracks with her boyfriend Eto and alone. I also know that Anali and Candy just started. Maybe it is time to start thinking about a Domina DJanes record label hehehe. What do you think about this idea people?
Fernanda was kind enough to pass us one of her tracks. You can find it in the player below.
What is the main goal Domina Djanes has?
The main goal is promoting the work of the DJanes in the team, support the work of other DJanes and most of all, support the Techno scene.
Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about, Girlpowerrrrrr!
As a DJ team you are involved in projects that support Techno like Mood Music and Techno TV. Can you tell us a little about these projects?
I am only involved with the Mood Music party, I did a Mood Music Radio Show, but unfortunately it got cancelled because the radio station closed down. The mood Music party intends to support and give more strength to the Techno scene in the region of Curitiba. Techno TV where Candy Cox was in charge also got cancelled.
Do you think the internet made a big change in the lifes of artists and their fans?
For sure it did! Now all the people have access to material and information much easier and faster. There is much more direct contact between fans, promoters, artists, agents, etc. From the artist’s point of view we have a lot more feedback on the work we are doing.
Is there anything else you want to tell the world on behalf of the Domina DJanes ?
DJ’s and artists; keep up the work you do, believe in what you are doing and do it the best way you can. Always with a lot of dedication, love and respect for the scene, colleagues and ofcourse your fans.
Fernanda, thank you very much for this interview, all the best to you and the girls and good luck with your goals. We hope to see you in Utrecht on the first of february!
