Interview with Motormorfoses

   September 28th, 2008 by Olly

Back again with another great interview, this time I sat down with Motormorfoses. They stand for unique live performances and wicked 4-decks sessions with a Brazilian twist!. Just moved from Brazil to Barcelona, Spain to join the Trivial clan and to establish their home base right in the middle of the action.

Hi Eto & Gab, tell us a little bit about your selves to kick off this interview..

Eto : I was born in 1980 in São Paulo Capital, Brasil. I am DJ since 2000, in 2004 Istarted with the electronic productions and our Motormorfoses live begunin 2006.

Gab : I was born in 1982 in Campinas City, São Paulo state, Brasil. I am DJ since 2001 playing Techno and Hard techno. I started to produce Techno in 2004 too and with the Motormorfoses live in 2006.

You have been into music since you were youngsters, can you tell us some
more about your musical backgrounds?

Eto : In 1996, a background period of my life, I started to do my own music in a Hardcore group, covering my favorite bands in Brasil like “Sepultura”, “ACDC” and “Black Sabath”. This is how I started my music formation. It was a tipical band of skater friends of my school., we performanced in some Blues bars and at friends Partys in Campinas.

Gab : Since around 12 years old I got passionate about dance music, I had a lot of K7 tapes with recorded songs that I played in little parties of friends. But during that time I was so young, with time I started to know how the professional DJs work with vinyls and everything. Around 16 years old I found the undergound electronic scene and the rave parties, that was just what I was looking out for.

You are together since quite a while now. How have you met eachother ?

Eto : Yes, a bit more then 8 years that we are together! I was at a friend’s birthday party when I saw Gab for the first time and I felt in love. We got together one time but she didn’t want nothing serious. For over 1 year we were just friends, became best friends and then we started our relation..

Gab : I think I was too young when I met him, the last thing I wanted at that time was a relationship. But after one year I realized that we were more then friends and I was in love. And after one more year we moved to an apartment to live together and to have our own space to play music.

Can you tell us about your first steps in the world of electronic music ?

Eto : This was when I tried to introduce Scratch and EFX to my rock band. The worst part was selling my bass amplifiers. Then I started to go to clubs and raves. So I decided to start playing records to have fun, I started with really old and bad turnatables that I borrowed for a while of my friends. Then I started to buy records, It was at friends little parties where they had the Technics turntables, at these parties I took my first steps becooming a DJ. I started with Acid and classic type of Techno like some records by Propouse NYC, and by artists like HeadRoom, Slobodan etc.

Gab : For me it was right at the time when I met Eto that I started to discover the underground eletronic scene. We went together to clubs and raves and maked new friends there. And then at friends parties I started to try to play records too so we decided to buy our own Technics turntables.

The first records I bought were from Glenn Wilson, Shufflemaster, Tim Xavier, Thomas P. Heckman and Adam Beyer…

How did you guys managed to break into the scene ?

Eto : It was 2001 in Campinas city, us and dj Lukas were already
friends, we always played at same friends little parties just to have
fun. Lukas and his partners had a project in a club that was the first undeground
project in the city called “Play”, we were there every party but we
didn’t have much money so sometimes we didn’t pay to get in. Then DJ
Lukas proposed us to play one night in change of our debt with the
club. This is were it all started for us ..

Gab : This was really kind proposal of him we will never forget. I remember that
I was so nervous that I thought in a first moment to not accept, but how
could we? And it was great, friends were always supporting us and we are so
thankfull to them and of course to DJ Lukas. After that we started to get invited to
play at other nights and started to made our own parties in the
city, we sended promo sessions to another promoters in Sao Paulo City.

So in August 2001 the moment came, when everything really started rolling
for you guys since your performance at the legendary ‘Play’ in
Campinas City, tell us about this memorable moment ..

Eto : think that first performance was like many others with many things
to fix. It was great and magic of course but we always had in mind to get
better and better. It was also great for making new friends and the school that the club was being for us., we learned alot !

Gab : I was shaking and nervous, but the friends there made such a good vibe!
It was great to play the first time in a place where I was always on the
dancefloor with the crowd. Without any professional experience I did everything
what I knew and learned to not make any mistacke. Unforgetable!

One of the most well-known events in your country is ‘Techcardia’ , can you
tell us a bout this massive rave ?

After the closing of “Play” club we had to do something for the scene to keep
It going in the city, so we decided to do a big rave of Techno music. So we,
Dj Lukas, 2 more friends and partners developed the first edition of the
“Techcardia” in 2002 . The line up had names like DJ Murphy, PETDuo and
many other great names in Brasil. We had had really good launch with around
1.000 people. Then the group made more other small parties and
next year another “Techcardia” edition with the intenational guests like “Space
Djs”. But with the difficulty of doing events in Brasil and also more in
Campinas city, were the electronic scene was just starting, we left the
Techcardia group. But we kept helping and working with them in everything
we could. Of course it was great learning experience for us, the DJs and also how to
understand how difficult it is to promote a party and to find sponsorship We
never made money with this, we did it always for the love and for the scene.

After spinning your records at great events and clubs, the most logical
step is producing your own records. Would you like to tell how you got into
producing ?

We felt the need to make music, ideas were coming up in our minds, it was around 2004. The first try was with the “Cubase” music composer software and our computer was so bad to do it. With time we were upgrading the computer and started to use the “Logic” software too. The Canadian dj/producer Patrick DSP gave us a support with the software, syhth and plugins of electronic production. Then we started to buy midi controls, sound cards and more professional stuff. Our first songs made were Techno and Hard techno.

Would you like to tell us about the producer side of you lives ?

Since we discovered the Ableton Live software and started to writte the songswith that, we decided to launch our live act. Nowadays we have a better place to produce, our apartment in Barcelona were we spend most of our time . It is a small and hot room, we put in some acoustictreatment that helps to get good sound and we can work better without disturbing the next door.

We started to produce the songs separated but we are always changing. Last year we did most part of the tracks together and now we are starting the idea separated and finishing together. Our inspiration comes from everywhere, we dont know exactly, guess it is a mix of our references of electronic, rock, classics like The Prodigy, Georgio Moroder, Kraftwerk, Johannes Heil, Sepultura, Deep Purple, Queen, Philip Glass, Bjork, and much much more…

How would you describe the style of your productions ?

We are not sure, we think Techno is enough for us to describe our sound. We think Techno is the sound of future and it always needs to get new and fresh, so it would be difficult to try to describe each change. We like to produce more hard but some soft techno too. Maybe we can call our sound “Morphoses techno”

( laughs )

You managed to boost yourselves into the major leage of the Hardtechno scene with your quality releases on great labels like ‘Sound Attack‘ and
Madhouse‘. Here at beatboost we are very pleased to have you on worldsampler part 3 with your massive production ‘Freak Frisson’, would you like to tell us about the track ?

The first idea was making a strong synth melody , like we loved on tracksby Thomas P. Heckman for exemple. But we introduced our ownpersonality on the sound.

So the impression that the sound or someone causes insomeplace is called frisson so we called this tracks “Freak Frisson” in homenage to all freak party people and the frisson that we all make on the parties. Its hard to explain , we know hehe.

Besides your DJ and producing career, you are also known for your musical
project ‘Motormorfoses Live’ which was born in 2006 as you mentioned before, would you like tell us some more about it ?

We decided to introduce our live-act when we though that we had a lot of fresh ideas to show the world. We didn’t have any released track yet so we didn’t know if it would make good impression, but decided to take the risk. The first presentation was just great, the crowd was incredible! We used the Ibook G4 with Ableton Live, an M-Audio Ozone midi control and a Korg Kaosspad 2 efx machine. And also we did some vocals with microphone.

Today we have a “Bitstream” midi control, a “Motu Ultralite” sound card, a Mac Book G4 with Ableton Live 7.0.10, a Akai MPC 1000 sample machine, the korg KP2 efx and we are introducing again the vocal with a microphone “Shure”. But inside the studio we use other stuff…

In April you toured through Europe, playing at the biggest clubs like ‘La
Cova’( Barcelona), ‘Obsession’ ( St Veit, Austria ) and Techcardia vs Dual
Festival” Barcelona edition. To name but a few, would you like to tell us
about your experiences ?

We had so good experiences playing at parties in Spain, like 3º Trivial Bday, La Cova, Florida 135, Techcardia, H2 Zone festival, club Zorecks, and many more Also at Obsession (Austria), the people are fantastic and we
learned a lot from them. But there are so much countries that we’ve never been and we are anxious to play at new places!
